After drama at the start with a mechanical fault in the midfield leaving half the grid riding through smoke, Carlos Checa was the man who shot away into the lead – putting on a dominant show until disaster struck the Spaniard and with only a handful of laps remaining, the pendulum of fate swung back towards Biaggi.
